About Courtney
Hi! I’m Courtney! I am a mom, musician, fitness enthusiast, and Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). I am very passionate about my job and providing holistic services that address the needs of clients, and their families.
I grew up in a small town just outside of St. John’s, Newfoundland, and I am a Newfoundlander at heart. I received a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in French and Linguistics from Memorial University in 2007. From there, I moved to Ottawa to complete my Masters in Orthophonie (Speech-Language Pathology; French). I always found health care professions interesting, but it was in Ottawa that my fascination for understanding the mechanics of speech, language, and cognition, and helping people improve their communication skills came to fruition.
Once I completed my Masters in 2009, I moved to Yorkton, Saskatchewan, to work in the Catholic school district. Being that I was the only SLP in the district and a new grad, I quickly learned how to lead a team, and provide professional development opportunities in a collaborative space. I also participated in numerous training sessions myself, including the PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), which I have adapted for use in classrooms and homes since.
I moved from Yorkton to Edmonton in 2012 and started a job with Edmonton Catholic schools in the early learning programs. I worked there for 8 years with children from pre-kindergarten to grade 9. I learned so many wonderful strategies and participated in several professional development opportunities, while working within a multidisciplinary team setting. With the district, I gained experience working with children with a wide range of needs. With the help of the multidisciplinary teams, we often problem solved ways to support “tip of the pyramid” needs within the classroom. During this time, I also worked for some private companies to gain experience working with children with complex communication disorders in their homes.
Currently, my son is attending kindergarten, and I am contracted for a company based in Edmonton who provide in-home and tele-therapy services and support to children and adults.
